He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a violinist and conductor. Feinberg began playing the piano at a young age and showed great promise as a musician. Feinberg studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he was a student of Alexander Glazunov and Anatoly Lyadov. He graduated in 1911 with a gold medal and went on to become a professor at the conservatory. He also taught at the Moscow Conservatory and the Leningrad Conservatory. Feinberg was known for his virtuosic piano playing and his interpretations of the works of Bach, Beethoven, and Chopin. He was also a composer and wrote works for piano, chamber ensembles, and orchestra. Feinberg's career as a performer began in the early 1910s, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented pianists of his generation. He performed extensively throughout Russia and Europe, and he made his American debut in 1922. One of Feinberg's most notable performances was his 1927 performance of Bach's Goldberg Variations in Moscow. The performance was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to establish Feinberg as a leading interpreter of Bach's music. Feinberg was also a prolific recording artist, and he made numerous recordings throughout his career. His recordings of Bach's keyboard works are particularly highly regarded, and they are still considered some of the best recordings of these works. Feinberg was the recipient of numerous awards and honors throughout his career. He was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1946 for his contributions to Soviet music, and he was named a People's Artist of the USSR in 1954. Feinberg continued to perform and teach until his death on June 22, 1962, in Moscow.
