The San Francisco Symphony is a world-renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences for over a century. Founded in 1911, the orchestra has become a cultural icon of the San Francisco Bay Area and a leading force in the classical music world. The San Francisco Symphony was founded by a group of music lovers who wanted to bring high-quality classical music to the city. The group was led by Alfred Hertz, a German conductor who had previously worked with the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Hertz was appointed as the orchestra's first music director and led the ensemble in its inaugural concert on December 8, 1911. Over the years, the San Francisco Symphony has had many notable music directors, including Pierre Monteux, Josef Krips, Seiji Ozawa, and Michael Tilson Thomas. Each of these conductors has left their mark on the orchestra, shaping its sound and guiding its artistic vision. One of the most significant moments in the San Francisco Symphony's history came in 1980 when it moved into its current home, Davies Symphony Hall. The hall was designed specifically for the orchestra and has become a beloved landmark of the city. Its acoustics are considered some of the best in the world, and it has hosted countless memorable performances over the years. The San Francisco Symphony has also been recognized with numerous awards and accolades throughout its history. In 1992, it won its first Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance for a recording of Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet." Since then, the orchestra has won a total of 15 Grammy Awards, including Best Classical Album and Best Orchestral Performance. The San Francisco Symphony has also been recognized for its commitment to education and community outreach. In 1983, it launched the Adventures in Music program, which provides free music education to over 25,000 students in the San Francisco Unified School District each year. The orchestra also hosts a variety of community concerts and events, including the annual free concert in Golden Gate Park. One of the San Francisco Symphony's most notable achievements came under the leadership of Michael Tilson Thomas, who served as music director from 1995 to 2020. During his tenure, the orchestra became known for its innovative programming and commitment to contemporary music. Thomas also led the orchestra on several international tours, including trips to Europe, Asia, and South America. Under Thomas's leadership, the San Francisco Symphony also became the first American orchestra to launch its own in-house record label, SFS Media. The label has released over 30 recordings, many of which have received critical acclaim and won Grammy Awards. Some of the San Francisco Symphony's most memorable performances have included collaborations with some of the world's most renowned musicians. In 2011, the orchestra performed a special concert with Metallica, which was later released as a live album and DVD. The concert featured Metallica's music arranged for a full symphony orchestra and was a unique fusion of classical and heavy metal music. The San Francisco Symphony has also collaborated with a variety of other artists, including Yo-Yo Ma, Lang Lang, and Itzhak Perlman. In 2018, the orchestra performed a special concert with the legendary singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, which was later released as a live album.
