Artist Info

The Heath Quartet is a British classical music ensemble that has gained international recognition for its exceptional performances and recordings. The quartet was founded in 2002 by four young musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to explore the rich repertoire of string quartets. The founding members of the Heath Quartet were violinists Oliver Heath and Cerys Jones, violist Gary Pomeroy, and cellist Christopher Murray. All four musicians had studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and had already established themselves as talented performers in their own right. The quartet's early years were spent honing their skills and building their reputation through performances at festivals and competitions across the UK and Europe. In 2005, they won the Tromp International String Quartet Competition in the Netherlands, which helped to raise their profile and secure more high-profile engagements. Over the years, the Heath Quartet has undergone some changes in personnel, with Christopher Murray leaving the group in 2013 and being replaced by cellist Christopher Murray. However, the quartet's commitment to excellence and their passion for chamber music has remained constant. One of the highlights of the Heath Quartet's career was their appointment as Associate Artists at Wigmore Hall in London in 2016. This prestigious position gave them the opportunity to perform a series of concerts at one of the world's most renowned chamber music venues, as well as to collaborate with other musicians and composers. The quartet has also been recognized for their outstanding recordings, which have received critical acclaim and numerous awards. Their debut album, featuring works by Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev, was released in 2013 and won the prestigious Gramophone Award for Best Chamber Music Recording. They have since released several more albums, including a recording of the complete string quartets of Sir Michael Tippett, which was also highly praised by critics. In addition to their work as a quartet, the members of the Heath Quartet are also committed to music education and outreach. They have worked with young musicians through the Wigmore Hall Learning programme and have also given masterclasses and workshops at schools and universities across the UK. The Heath Quartet's repertoire is wide-ranging, encompassing works from the classical and romantic periods as well as contemporary music. They have collaborated with a number of composers, including Hans Abrahamsen, Brett Dean, and Simon Rowland-Jones, and have premiered several new works. Some of the quartet's most memorable performances include their appearances at the BBC Proms, where they have performed works by Beethoven, Haydn, and Tippett, among others. They have also performed at major venues and festivals around the world, including the Berlin Philharmonie, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Salzburg Festival. In 2018, the Heath Quartet was awarded the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Chamber Music, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the field. This award is one of the highest honors in classical music and is a testament to the quartet's exceptional talent and dedication. Overall, the Heath Quartet is a remarkable ensemble that has made a significant contribution to the world of chamber music.
