Genre:ChamberKeyboardSarah Rothenberg is a renowned classical pianist, chamber musician, and artistic director. She was born in Washington D.C. in 1952 and grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a violinist and her mother was a pianist, so music was always a part of her life. She began playing the piano at the age of four and showed exceptional talent from an early age. Rothenberg studied at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore and later at the Juilliard School in New York City. She also spent time studying in Paris with the legendary pianist Nadia Boulanger. Her early career was marked by numerous awards and accolades, including the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1984. Rothenberg has performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. She has also collaborated with some of the most celebrated musicians of our time, including cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violinist Joshua Bell, and soprano Dawn Upshaw. In addition to her work as a performer, Rothenberg is also an accomplished artistic director. She founded the Da Camera of Houston chamber music series in 1987 and served as its artistic director for over 25 years. During her tenure, she brought together some of the world's most renowned musicians to perform in Houston, including the Emerson String Quartet, the Kronos Quartet, and jazz pianist Chick Corea. Rothenberg is also a passionate advocate for contemporary music. She has commissioned and premiered numerous works by some of the most important composers of our time, including John Harbison, George Perle, and György KurtĂ¡g. She has also recorded several albums of contemporary music, including a critically acclaimed recording of KurtĂ¡g's "JĂ¡tĂ©kok." One of Rothenberg's most notable achievements as an artistic director was the creation of the "Migrations" festival, which explored the connections between music and literature. The festival brought together musicians, writers, and scholars to explore the ways in which music and literature can inspire and inform one another. The festival was a huge success and was praised for its innovative programming and thoughtful exploration of the relationship between music and literature. Rothenberg's career has been marked by numerous awards and honors. In addition to the Avery Fisher Career Grant, she has received the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Distinguished Achievement Award, the Houston Arts Alliance Individual Artist Grant, and the Texas Medal of Arts. She has also been recognized for her work as an artistic director, receiving the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming and the Houston Press Mastermind Award. She has been praised for her innovative programming and her ability to bring together diverse artists to create unique and thought-provoking performances.
