He was born on August 16, 1949, in Moscow, Russia. Petrushansky's parents were both musicians, and his father was a well-known pianist. From a young age, Petrushansky was exposed to music and began playing the piano at the age of five. Petrushansky's talent was evident from an early age, and he began studying at the Moscow Conservatory when he was just seven years old. He studied under some of the most prominent pianists of the time, including Yakov Flier and Lev Vlassenko. Petrushansky's hard work and dedication paid off, and he graduated from the conservatory with honors in 1971. After graduation, Petrushansky began performing in concerts and competitions around the world. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and passionate pianist, and his performances were praised for their technical skill and emotional depth. In 1972, Petrushansky won the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition, which cemented his place as one of the world's leading pianists.
