He was the son of a classical pianist and a mother who was a music teacher. Gruntz grew up in a musical family and started playing the piano at a young age. He was exposed to classical music, jazz, and other genres of music from an early age, which influenced his musical style. Gruntz studied music at the Basel Conservatory and later at the Paris Conservatory. He also studied composition with the renowned composer and conductor Pierre Boulez. Gruntz was a versatile musician who played the piano, organ, and synthesizer. He was also a skilled arranger and conductor. In the 1950s, Gruntz started playing jazz professionally and formed his first band, the George Gruntz Trio. He played with many jazz musicians, including Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, and Phil Woods. In the 1960s, Gruntz became interested in avant-garde jazz and started experimenting with new sounds and techniques. He formed the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band in 1972, which became one of the most successful jazz bands in Europe. Gruntz was known for his innovative compositions and arrangements, which combined elements of jazz, classical music, and world music. He was also a prolific composer who wrote over 300 works, including symphonies, operas, and film scores. Some of his most famous works include "Theatre," "Magic of a Flute," and "Cosmic Chicken."
