Toomas Vavilov was born on May 15, 1985, in Tallinn, Estonia. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned conductor and his mother a pianist. From a young age, Toomas showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Toomas received his formal music education at the Tallinn Music High School, where he studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and pedagogue, Professor Peep Lassmann. He continued his studies at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, where he received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in piano performance. Throughout his career, Toomas has won numerous awards and accolades for his exceptional talent and musicianship. In 2005, he won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Tallinn, Estonia. He went on to win first prize at the International Piano Competition in Helsinki, Finland, in 2007, and the International Piano Competition in Moscow, Russia, in 2009. Toomas has performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America, captivating audiences with his virtuosic playing and expressive interpretations. He has appeared as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. One of the highlights of Toomas's career was his performance at the 2010 International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland. He was one of only 84 pianists selected from around the world to compete in this prestigious event, which is held every five years. Toomas's performance of Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor was praised by the judges and earned him a place in the semi-finals. Toomas is also a dedicated chamber musician and has collaborated with many of the world's leading instrumentalists and vocalists. He has performed in numerous chamber music festivals, including the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival in Finland, the Ravinia Festival in the United States, and the Salzburg Festival in Austria. In addition to his performing career, Toomas is also a passionate educator and has taught masterclasses and given lectures at many of the world's leading music institutions, including the Juilliard School in New York, the Royal Academy of Music in London, and the Moscow Conservatory. Toomas's repertoire is vast and includes works by many of the great composers, including Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the music of Sergei Rachmaninoff, and has been praised for his ability to capture the composer's unique blend of lyricism and virtuosity. Toomas's recordings have received critical acclaim and have been released on the Ondine, BIS, and Warner Classics labels. His recording of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra was named "Editor's Choice" by Gramophone magazine and was praised for its "sensitive and nuanced playing." Toomas continues to perform and teach around the world, and is widely regarded as one of the most exciting and dynamic pianists of his generation. His passion for music and dedication to his craft have earned him a place among the great musicians of our time.
