Magda Tagliaferro was a Brazilian classical pianist who was born on January 19, 1893, in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro. She was the daughter of Italian immigrants who had settled in Brazil. Her father was a violinist, and her mother was a singer. Magda showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Magda's talent was recognized early on, and she was sent to study in Paris at the age of 15. She studied with Isidor Philipp, a renowned piano teacher, and made her debut at the Salle Pleyel in Paris in 1911. She was only 18 years old at the time. Magda's career took off quickly, and she became known for her virtuosity and musicality. She performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States, and she was particularly popular in France. She was known for her interpretations of the works of Chopin, Beethoven, and Mozart. Magda's performances were highly acclaimed, and she received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 1928, she was awarded the Legion of Honor by the French government, and in 1935, she was awarded the Order of the Southern Cross by the Brazilian government. Magda was also a dedicated teacher, and she taught at the Paris Conservatory from 1936 to 1940. She also taught at the Juilliard School in New York City from 1941 to 1946. Many of her students went on to have successful careers as pianists. Magda continued to perform and teach throughout her life, and she remained active well into her 80s. She died on September 9, 1986, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the age of 93. Magda's legacy as a pianist and teacher continues to be celebrated today.
