Artist Info
Role:EnsembleGenre:ChamberRebel is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their unique and dynamic performances for over two decades. The ensemble was founded in 1991 by Jörg-Michael Schwarz and Karen Marie Marmer, who both serve as the group's artistic directors and violinists. Schwarz and Marmer met while studying at The Juilliard School in New York City and quickly discovered a shared passion for early music. They founded Rebel with the goal of exploring the rich and diverse repertoire of Baroque and Classical music, and bringing it to life with their own unique interpretation and style. The ensemble's name, Rebel, is a nod to the French Baroque composer Jean-Féry Rebel, whose music they frequently perform. Rebel's core members include Schwarz and Marmer on violin, John Moran on cello, and Dongsok Shin on harpsichord. The ensemble often collaborates with other musicians and vocalists to create larger ensembles for specific performances. Rebel has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, the Boston Early Music Festival, and the BBC Proms. They have also toured extensively throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. One of Rebel's most notable performances was their 2004 appearance at the BBC Proms, where they performed a program of Baroque music by Handel, Vivaldi, and Rebel himself. The ensemble received critical acclaim for their virtuosic playing and dynamic interpretation of the music. Rebel has also been recognized with numerous awards and accolades throughout their career. In 2005, they received a Grammy nomination for their recording of Handel's "Water Music" on the Dorian label. They have also been awarded the Diapason d'Or, the Choc de Classica, and the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik for their recordings. In addition to their performances and recordings, Rebel is also committed to education and outreach. They frequently give masterclasses and workshops for students and young musicians, and have served as ensemble-in-residence at several universities and music festivals. Overall, Rebel has established themselves as one of the leading ensembles in the world of early music. Their passion for the repertoire, combined with their virtuosic playing and dynamic interpretation, has earned them a devoted following and critical acclaim. As they continue to explore and expand the boundaries of early music, Rebel is sure to remain a force to be reckoned with in the classical music world.More....
