The Orchestra of Radio Italiana, also known as the Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma, is a classical music ensemble based in Rome, Italy. The orchestra was founded in 1950 by the Italian Radio and Television Broadcasting Company, RAI, with the aim of promoting classical music in Italy and around the world. The founding members of the orchestra were a group of talented musicians who had previously worked for RAI as session musicians. They were led by the renowned Italian conductor, Fernando Previtali, who served as the orchestra's first music director. Previtali was a respected figure in the Italian classical music scene, having previously conducted the Milan Symphony Orchestra and the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. Under Previtali's leadership, the Orchestra of Radio Italiana quickly established itself as one of the leading classical music ensembles in Italy. The orchestra's first major performance was in 1951, when it played at the prestigious Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Italy. The festival was a major cultural event that attracted some of the world's most renowned artists, and the Orchestra of Radio Italiana's performance was widely praised for its technical excellence and musical sensitivity. Over the years, the Orchestra of Radio Italiana has performed at many of the world's most prestigious concert halls and music festivals. The orchestra has toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas, and has collaborated with some of the world's most renowned conductors and soloists. One of the highlights of the orchestra's early years was its performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in 1955, which was conducted by the legendary German conductor, Wilhelm Furtwängler. The performance was widely regarded as one of the greatest interpretations of the work ever recorded, and it helped to establish the Orchestra of Radio Italiana as a major force in the classical music world. In the 1960s and 1970s, the Orchestra of Radio Italiana continued to build on its reputation for excellence, performing a wide range of classical works from the Baroque to the contemporary. The orchestra's music directors during this period included the Italian conductors Franco Ferrara and Bruno Maderna, both of whom were known for their innovative and experimental approach to classical music. In the 1980s and 1990s, the Orchestra of Radio Italiana underwent a period of transition, as it adapted to the changing landscape of the classical music world. The orchestra's music directors during this period included the Italian conductor Riccardo Muti, who went on to become one of the most celebrated conductors of his generation. Under Muti's leadership, the Orchestra of Radio Italiana continued to push the boundaries of classical music, performing a wide range of works from the classical and contemporary repertoire. The orchestra's performances were marked by their technical precision, musical sensitivity, and emotional depth, and they earned the orchestra a reputation as one of the finest ensembles in the world. In recent years, the Orchestra of Radio Italiana has continued to build on its legacy of excellence, performing a wide range of classical works and collaborating with some of the world's most renowned conductors and soloists. The orchestra's current music director is the Italian conductor Daniele Gatti, who has been praised for his innovative and dynamic approach to classical music.
