Artist Info
Rachel Nicholls is a British soprano who has established herself as one of the leading classical music artists of her generation. Born in 1974 in the town of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, Nicholls showed an early interest in music and began singing in her local church choir at the age of six. She went on to study music at the University of Huddersfield, where she received a Bachelor of Music degree with honors. After completing her undergraduate studies, Nicholls continued her vocal training at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where she studied with the renowned soprano Lynne Dawson. During this time, she also participated in masterclasses with some of the world's leading vocal coaches, including Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Thomas Hampson. Nicholls' professional career began in earnest in the early 2000s, when she began performing with some of the UK's leading opera companies, including English National Opera, Opera North, and Welsh National Opera. She quickly gained a reputation for her powerful and expressive voice, as well as her ability to bring depth and nuance to a wide range of operatic roles. One of Nicholls' early breakthrough performances came in 2005, when she was cast as the lead in a production of Benjamin Britten's "The Turn of the Screw" at the Aldeburgh Festival. Her performance was widely praised by critics, who noted her ability to convey both the innocence and the darkness of the character of the Governess. In the years that followed, Nicholls continued to build her reputation as one of the UK's most talented and versatile sopranos. She performed in a wide range of operas, from classic works by Mozart and Verdi to contemporary pieces by composers such as Thomas Adès and George Benjamin. One of Nicholls' most notable performances came in 2012, when she was cast as the lead in a production of Richard Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" at the English National Opera. The production, which was directed by acclaimed theater director Peter Sellars, was widely regarded as one of the most innovative and daring interpretations of the opera in recent years. Nicholls' performance was praised for its emotional depth and intensity, as well as her ability to convey the complex psychological dynamics between the two lead characters. In addition to her work in opera, Nicholls has also established herself as a highly sought-after concert performer. She has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. She has also collaborated with some of the most respected conductors in the business, including Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, and Sir John Eliot Gardiner. Nicholls' concert repertoire is wide-ranging, encompassing everything from Baroque and Classical works to contemporary pieces by living composers. She has a particular affinity for the music of Gustav Mahler, and has performed his symphonies and song cycles with great success. Throughout her career, Nicholls has received numerous awards and accolades for her work. In 2006, she was named Young Singer of the Year at the International Opera Awards, and in 2010 she was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Singer of the Year award. She has also been nominated for several prestigious awards, including a Grammy Award for her recording of Benjamin Britten's "War Requiem" with the London Symphony Orchestra.More....
