Born in New York City in 1960, Dreyfus grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a violinist, and her mother was a pianist. From a young age, Dreyfus showed a keen interest in music and began playing the viola at the age of nine. Dreyfus received her early musical training at the Juilliard School, where she studied with the legendary violist William Lincer. She later went on to study with Karen Tuttle at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore. Dreyfus quickly established herself as a talented young musician, and she began performing professionally while still in her teens. In 1982, Dreyfus joined the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, a renowned ensemble that is known for its innovative approach to classical music. With the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Dreyfus performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall in London. She also recorded several albums with the ensemble, including a critically acclaimed recording of Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante. Throughout her career, Dreyfus has been a passionate advocate for contemporary music. She has premiered numerous works by contemporary composers, including John Harbison, Joan Tower, and Richard Danielpour. Dreyfus has also collaborated with many of the world's leading composers, including Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and John Adams. In addition to her work as a performer, Dreyfus is also a dedicated teacher. She has taught at several prestigious institutions, including the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the Peabody Conservatory of Music. Dreyfus is known for her innovative teaching methods, which emphasize the importance of developing a strong technical foundation while also encouraging students to explore their own musical creativity. In 1991, she was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, one of the most prestigious awards in classical music.
