Born on August 22, 1949, in New York City, Hoose grew up in a family that valued music and the arts. His father was a composer and his mother was a pianist, and they encouraged him to pursue his passion for music from a young age. Hoose began his musical education at the age of six, studying piano and composition with his mother. He later attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City, where he studied conducting with Leonard Bernstein and composition with Aaron Copland. After graduating from high school, Hoose went on to study at the Juilliard School, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance. In 1972, Hoose joined the faculty of the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he has remained ever since. Over the years, he has held a number of positions at the conservatory, including chair of the conducting department and director of orchestras. He has also served as music director of the Cantata Singers and Chamber Orchestra, a Boston-based ensemble that specializes in the performance of choral music. Throughout his career, Hoose has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to the world of classical music. In 1983, he was awarded the Koussevitzky Conducting Prize by the Tanglewood Music Center, and in 1990, he received the Outstanding Alumni Award from the Juilliard School. He has also been honored by the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Massachusetts Cultural Council. One of the highlights of Hoose's career was his tenure as music director of the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP), a contemporary music ensemble that he founded in 1996. Under his leadership, BMOP became one of the most respected new music ensembles in the country, commissioning and performing works by some of the most important composers of our time. Hoose's commitment to new music has been a hallmark of his career, and he has been instrumental in bringing the work of living composers to a wider audience. In addition to his work with BMOP, Hoose has conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with some of the most celebrated soloists of our time, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Dawn Upshaw. Hoose's conducting style is characterized by his deep musicality and his ability to bring out the best in his musicians. He is known for his attention to detail and his ability to communicate his vision to his performers. His performances are marked by a sense of energy and excitement, and he has a talent for creating a sense of unity among his musicians. Throughout his career, Hoose has been a passionate advocate for music education.
