He was the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants and grew up in a musical family. His father was a cantor, and his mother was a pianist. Sims began playing the piano at a young age and showed an early interest in music. Sims attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he studied composition with Vincent Persichetti and Roger Sessions. He also studied with Milton Babbitt at Princeton University. Sims was a gifted student and received numerous awards and honors throughout his academic career. Sims' early works were influenced by the serialism of his teachers, but he soon developed his own unique style. He was interested in exploring the possibilities of microtonal music and began experimenting with alternate tuning systems. Sims' music was often complex and challenging, but it was also highly expressive and emotional. One of Sims' most significant works is his String Quartet No. 2, which was composed in 1965. The piece is written in a 72-tone equal temperament tuning system, which allows for a greater range of harmonic possibilities than the traditional 12-tone system. The quartet is a challenging work for both the performers and the listeners, but it is also a deeply rewarding experience. Another notable work by Sims is his Piano Sonata No. 3, which was composed in 1972. The piece is written in a 31-tone equal temperament tuning system and is a virtuosic showcase for the performer. The sonata is a complex and challenging work, but it is also highly expressive and emotional. Sims' music was often performed by some of the most prominent ensembles and performers of his time. His works were premiered by the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Juilliard String Quartet, among others. Sims was also a respected teacher and taught at several universities, including Columbia University and the New England Conservatory of Music. In addition to his work as a composer and teacher, Sims was also a respected music theorist. He wrote several influential articles and books on microtonal music and tuning systems, including "Elements of Tone and Intonation" and "Tuning, Timbre, Spectrum, Scale." Sims continued to compose and teach until his death on December 6, 2015, at the age of 87. His legacy as a composer and theorist continues to influence contemporary music today.More....
