Born in 1963 in the United States, Rundell grew up in a musical family and began playing the trumpet at a young age. He went on to study music at the University of North Texas and later earned a Master of Music degree from the University of Michigan. Rundell's career as a conductor began in the early 1990s when he was appointed as the assistant conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. He quickly gained recognition for his talent and was soon invited to conduct other major orchestras, including the Houston Symphony and the Minnesota Orchestra. In 1997, Rundell was appointed as the principal conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, a position he held for six years. During his time with the orchestra, he led them on several successful tours and recordings, including a critically acclaimed recording of the music of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. Rundell has also been a frequent guest conductor with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the London Sinfonietta, and the Philharmonia Orchestra. He has conducted at major music festivals around the world, including the Edinburgh International Festival, the BBC Proms, and the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. In addition to his work as a conductor, Rundell is also an accomplished trumpet player. He has performed as a soloist with several major orchestras, including the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. He has also recorded several albums as a trumpet player, including a critically acclaimed recording of the music of John Cage. Throughout his career, Rundell has received numerous awards and accolades for his work in classical music.
