He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Mascha showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Mascha's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his mother and later studied with renowned pianists such as Alfred Brendel and Wilhelm Kempff. Mascha's talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained a reputation as a prodigy. In 1945, Mascha made his debut as a concert pianist in Vienna. He was just 20 years old at the time, but his performance was met with critical acclaim. Mascha's career took off from there, and he began performing in major concert halls around the world. One of Mascha's most notable performances was at the Salzburg Festival in 1952. He performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, also known as the Emperor Concerto, with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The performance was a huge success, and Mascha received a standing ovation from the audience. Mascha continued to perform at the Salzburg Festival for many years, and he became known for his interpretations of Beethoven's piano works. He also performed works by other composers such as Mozart, Schubert, and Brahms. In addition to his performances, Mascha was also a respected teacher. He taught at the Vienna Music Academy and later at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Many of his students went on to have successful careers as pianists. Mascha received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1965, he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art. He was also awarded the Mozart Medal by the International Mozarteum Foundation in 1985. Mascha continued to perform and teach until his death in 2006. He was 81 years old at the time of his death.
