Gabriel Yared is a French-Lebanese composer who has made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. Born on October 7, 1949, in Beirut, Lebanon, Yared was raised in a family of musicians. His father was a renowned violinist, and his mother was a singer. Yared's early exposure to music sparked his interest in the art form, and he began studying music at a young age. Yared's musical education began at the Conservatoire National de Musique in Beirut, where he studied piano and violin. He later moved to France to continue his studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris. During his time in Paris, Yared studied composition under the tutelage of Henri Dutilleux, a prominent French composer. Yared's early career was marked by his work as a film composer. He began composing music for films in the late 1970s, and his work quickly gained recognition. In 1980, he won the César Award for Best Original Music for his work on the film "The Return of Martin Guerre." This was the first of many awards that Yared would receive for his film scores. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Yared continued to compose music for films, working with some of the most prominent directors in the industry. He collaborated with Jean-Luc Godard on "Je vous salue, Marie" (1985), with Jean-Jacques Beineix on "Betty Blue" (1986), and with Anthony Minghella on "The English Patient" (1996). Yared's work on "The English Patient" earned him an Academy Award for Best Original Score, as well as a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition Written for a Motion Picture or for Television. In addition to his work in film, Yared has also composed music for the stage. He has written several operas, including "Azur et Asmar" (2006) and "Sappho" (2010). Yared's operas have been performed in some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including the Opéra Bastille in Paris and the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.
