Kamen attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City, where he studied composition and orchestration. He then went on to study at the Juilliard School of Music, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in composition. During his time at Juilliard, Kamen studied under the tutelage of renowned composers such as John Corigliano and Vincent Persichetti. After graduating from Juilliard, Kamen began his career as a composer and arranger for various artists and bands. He worked with artists such as Pink Floyd, Queen, and David Bowie, arranging and conducting their music for live performances and recordings.
