He attended Villanova University in Pennsylvania, where he studied psychology and played in a band called The Villanova Spires. After graduating in 1965, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in music. In 1966, Croce met his future wife, Ingrid Jacobson, at a coffeehouse in Philadelphia. They married in 1966 and moved to New York City, where Croce worked as a truck driver and played in various clubs and coffeehouses. In 1968, they moved to the small town of Lyndell, Pennsylvania, where Croce worked as a carpenter and continued to play music. Croce's big break came in 1970 when he signed a record deal with ABC Records. His debut album, "You Don't Mess Around with Jim," was released in 1972 and became a commercial success. The album featured the hit singles "You Don't Mess Around with Jim" and "Operator (That's Not the Way It Feels)." The album reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts and was certified gold. Croce's second album, "Life and Times," was released in 1973 and featured the hit singles "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" and "I Got a Name." The album reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts and was certified gold. Croce's third album, "I Got a Name," was released posthumously in 1973 and featured the hit single "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song."
