The State of Mexico Symphony Orchestra, also known as the Orquesta Sinfónica del Estado de México (OSEM), is a classical music ensemble based in Toluca, Mexico. The orchestra was founded in 1971 by Mexican conductor Enrique Bátiz, who served as its music director until 2001. Bátiz, who had previously conducted the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra, envisioned the creation of a new orchestra that would serve as a cultural ambassador for the State of Mexico. With the support of the state government, he assembled a group of talented musicians from across Mexico and abroad to form the OSEM. Over the years, the OSEM has become one of the most prominent orchestras in Mexico and has gained international recognition for its performances and recordings. The orchestra has collaborated with many renowned soloists and conductors, including Plácido Domingo, Yo-Yo Ma, and Zubin Mehta. The OSEM's current music director is Rodrigo Macías, who took over the position in 2018. Macías, a Mexican conductor and composer, has worked with many orchestras in Mexico and abroad and has won several awards for his compositions. The OSEM's repertoire includes a wide range of classical music, from Baroque to contemporary works. The orchestra has also commissioned and premiered many new works by Mexican and international composers. One of the OSEM's most notable performances was its debut at the Carnegie Hall in New York City in 1984. The orchestra received critical acclaim for its performance of works by Mexican composers Carlos Chávez and Silvestre Revueltas. The OSEM has also performed at other prestigious venues, such as the Royal Festival Hall in London and the Salle Pleyel in Paris. In addition to its concert performances, the OSEM has also recorded extensively. The orchestra has released over 100 recordings, including several award-winning albums. One of its most acclaimed recordings is the complete cycle of Beethoven's symphonies, which was released in 1997 and received the Diapason d'Or award. The OSEM has received many awards and honors throughout its history. In 2011, the orchestra was awarded the National Arts and Sciences Prize in the category of Fine Arts by the Mexican government. The prize recognized the OSEM's contribution to the development of classical music in Mexico and its promotion of Mexican composers. The OSEM has also been recognized for its educational and outreach programs. The orchestra has a strong commitment to music education and regularly performs for schoolchildren and young audiences. The OSEM's youth orchestra, the Orquesta Sinfónica Infantil y Juvenil del Estado de México, provides training and performance opportunities for young musicians in the state. In conclusion, the State of Mexico Symphony Orchestra is a world-class ensemble that has made significant contributions to the development of classical music in Mexico and beyond. With its talented musicians, diverse repertoire, and commitment to education and outreach, the OSEM continues to inspire and enrich audiences around the world.
