Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1975, Uchida began playing the piano at the age of four and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She studied with some of the most distinguished teachers in Japan, including Hiroko Nakamura and Kazuko Yasukawa, and won numerous competitions and awards as a young pianist. In 1993, Uchida moved to the United States to continue her studies at the Juilliard School in New York City. There, she studied with the legendary pianist and teacher Yoheved Kaplinsky, who helped her refine her technique and develop her musical voice. Uchida quickly established herself as a rising star in the classical music world, winning the prestigious Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in 1994 and making her debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1995. Since then, Uchida has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. She has collaborated with some of the most distinguished conductors of our time, including Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, and Christoph von Dohnányi. Her repertoire is vast and varied, ranging from the works of Bach and Mozart to the music of contemporary composers such as György Ligeti and Thomas Adès. One of Uchida's most notable achievements was her complete cycle of Mozart's piano sonatas, which she performed over the course of several years in major concert halls around the world. This project was a labor of love for Uchida, who has long been recognized as one of the foremost interpreters of Mozart's music. Her performances of these sonatas were praised for their clarity, elegance, and emotional depth, and they cemented her reputation as one of the leading pianists of her generation.
