Born on October 7, 1982, in Chongqing, China, Yundi Li showed an early aptitude for music and began studying the piano at the age of four. His parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music, enrolling him in the Sichuan Conservatory of Music in Chengdu when he was just seven years old. Under the guidance of his teachers, Yundi Li quickly developed into a prodigious talent, winning his first competition at the age of ten and making his debut with the Chongqing Symphony Orchestra at the age of twelve. He continued to win prizes and accolades throughout his teenage years, including first prize in the 1994 Stravinsky International Piano Competition in the United States and the silver medal in the 1995 International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. In 2000, Yundi Li gained international recognition when he won the prestigious International Frédéric Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, becoming the youngest pianist ever to do so at the age of 18. His performance of Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor was hailed by critics and audiences alike for its technical brilliance and emotional depth, and it launched Yundi Li's career as a soloist on the world stage. Since then, Yundi Li has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with some of the most distinguished conductors of our time, such as Daniel Barenboim, Seiji Ozawa, and Valery Gergiev. One of Yundi Li's most memorable performances was his debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City in 2003, where he played a program of works by Chopin, Liszt, and Beethoven to a sold-out audience. The New York Times praised his "dazzling technique and musicality" and declared him "a pianist to watch." Yundi Li has also made numerous recordings, including several acclaimed albums of Chopin's music. His recording of Chopin's complete Nocturnes won the ECHO Klassik Award in 2008, and his recording of Chopin's Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 with the Berlin Philharmonic under the baton of Seiji Ozawa was named "Editor's Choice" by Gramophone magazine. In addition to his performing career, Yundi Li is also a dedicated teacher and mentor to young musicians. He has served as a guest professor at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and he has given masterclasses around the world.
