He later went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree. He continued his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he earned his Master of Music degree. After completing his studies, Rex began his professional career as a cellist. He quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent and was soon performing with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world. In 1977, he joined the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as its principal cellist, a position he held for over three decades.
