He received his first formal training at the Berlin Conservatory, where he studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and composer, Karl-Heinz Kämmerling. Hilpert's talent was quickly recognized, and he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Juilliard School in New York City. During his time at Juilliard, Hilpert studied under the tutelage of some of the most prominent pianists of the time, including Claudio Arrau and Rudolf Serkin. He also had the opportunity to perform in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center. After completing his studies at Juilliard, Hilpert returned to Germany and began his career as a concert pianist. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented pianists of his generation, and his performances were praised for their technical brilliance and emotional depth. Hilpert's career highlights include his performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, which was widely regarded as one of the greatest performances of the piece in recent history.
