Born on 8th May 1958 in Liverpool, England, Harvey grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a church organist, and his mother was a music teacher. Harvey's love for music was evident from a young age, and he started singing in the church choir when he was just six years old. Harvey's musical education began at the Liverpool Cathedral Choir School, where he received training in choral singing. He later went on to study at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where he honed his skills as a soloist. After completing his studies, Harvey began his professional career as a soloist, performing in concerts and operas across the UK and Europe. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented baritones of his generation, and his performances were praised for their clarity, depth, and emotional intensity. One of Harvey's most significant achievements was his collaboration with the English Baroque Soloists, a period-instrument orchestra founded by Sir John Eliot Gardiner. Harvey worked with the orchestra for over two decades, performing in numerous concerts and recordings. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, and his performances of Bach's cantatas and passions were widely regarded as some of the best in the world. Harvey's other notable collaborations included performances with the Academy of Ancient Music, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and the Monteverdi Choir. He also worked with several leading conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Colin Davis, and Sir Charles Mackerras. Throughout his career, Harvey received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to classical music. In 1992, he was awarded the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society's Young Artist Award, which recognized his outstanding talent and potential. He was also awarded the Gramophone Award for Best Baroque Vocal Recording in 2003, for his performance of Bach's St. John Passion with the English Baroque Soloists. Harvey's performances were not limited to the concert hall. He also appeared in several operas, including productions of Mozart's Don Giovanni, Handel's Giulio Cesare, and Monteverdi's L'Orfeo.
