Her father recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Barrientos made her debut at the age of 18 in the role of Rosina in Rossini's "The Barber of Seville" at the Teatro Principal in Valencia. Her performance was well-received, and she quickly gained a reputation as a talented young soprano. She went on to perform in several other operas in Spain, including "Carmen" and "La Traviata." In 1906, Barrientos made her debut at the Teatro Real in Madrid in the role of Gilda in Verdi's "Rigoletto." Her performance was a huge success, and she quickly became one of the most sought-after sopranos in Spain. She went on to perform in several other operas at the Teatro Real, including "La Bohème" and "Madama Butterfly." In 1909, Barrientos made her debut at the Royal Opera House in London in the role of Rosina in "The Barber of Seville." Her performance was a huge success, and she quickly became a favorite of London audiences. Maria Barrientos died on August 6, 1946, in Madrid, Spain. She was 62 years old. She is remembered as one of the greatest sopranos of the early 20th century and as a pioneer for Spanish opera singers.
