Roberto Szidon was a Brazilian classical pianist who was born on July 21, 1941, in Porto Alegre, Brazil. He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known conductor and composer. Szidon began playing the piano at a young age and showed great promise as a musician. Szidon's talent was recognized early on, and he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Juilliard School in New York City when he was just 16 years old. He studied under the renowned pianist Rosina Lhévinne, and his talent continued to flourish under her guidance. In 1960, Szidon won the prestigious Busoni International Piano Competition in Bolzano, Italy. This was a major achievement for the young pianist, and it helped to launch his career on the international stage. He went on to perform in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Royal Albert Hall in London. Szidon was known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly renowned for his performances of the music of Franz Liszt, and he recorded several albums of Liszt's music throughout his career. One of Szidon's most memorable performances was his 1972 performance of Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Herbert von Karajan. This performance was recorded and released on DVD, and it remains a classic example of Szidon's artistry. Szidon was also a prolific recording artist, and he recorded over 30 albums throughout his career. His recordings of the music of Chopin, Liszt, and Debussy are particularly highly regarded, and they continue to be popular with classical music fans today. In addition to his performing and recording career, Szidon was also a respected teacher. He taught at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich, Germany, and he also gave masterclasses around the world. Many of his students went on to have successful careers as pianists themselves. Sadly, Szidon's career was cut short when he died of cancer on July 21, 2011, on his 70th birthday. However, his legacy as one of the greatest pianists of his generation lives on through his recordings and the memories of those who were fortunate enough to hear him play live.
