She was the youngest of three children and her parents divorced when she was young. Her mother took her and her siblings to live with her grandparents in Cincinnati. Day's love for music began at a young age. She started singing in a church choir and later joined a local dance band. In 1939, at the age of 17, she left home to tour with the Les Brown Band. She quickly became the band's lead vocalist and recorded several hits with them, including "Sentimental Journey" and "My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time." In 1948, Day signed a contract with Warner Bros. Pictures and began her acting career. She starred in several successful films, including "Romance on the High Seas," "Calamity Jane," and "Pillow Talk." She also continued to record music and had several hit songs, including "Secret Love" and "Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)." Day's music career was just as successful as her acting career. She recorded over 650 songs and released 29 albums. She won several awards for her music, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. One of Day's most memorable performances was in the 1953 film "Calamity Jane." The film was a huge success and helped solidify Day's status as a Hollywood star. In 1959, Day starred in the romantic comedy "Pillow Talk" with Rock Hudson. The film was a huge success and earned Day an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. She went on to star in two more films with Hudson, "Lover Come Back" and "Send Me No Flowers." Day's personal life was not without its challenges. She was married four times and had one son, Terry Melcher. Melcher was a successful record producer and worked with several famous musicians, including the Beach Boys. He passed away in 2004 from cancer. Day was also an animal rights activist and founded the Doris Day Animal Foundation in 1978. The foundation's mission is to help animals in need and promote animal welfare. Day was a lifelong animal lover and had several pets throughout her life. In 2011, Day released her last album, "My Heart," which featured previously unreleased recordings.
