Jane Powell was born on April 1, 1929, in Portland, Oregon. She was the youngest of two children born to Paul E. Burce and Eileen Baker Burce. Her father was a traveling salesman, and her mother was a housewife. Powell's parents were both musically inclined, and they encouraged her to pursue a career in music from a young age. Powell began singing and dancing lessons at the age of two, and by the time she was six, she was performing in local talent shows. She made her radio debut at the age of eight, and by the time she was 12, she had her own radio show in Portland. In 1943, Powell's family moved to Hollywood, California, where she began auditioning for film roles. She landed her first film role in 1944, in the musical "Song of the Open Road." She went on to appear in several more films, including "Holiday in Mexico" (1946), "A Date with Judy" (1948), and "Royal Wedding" (1951). Powell's talent as a singer and dancer quickly became apparent, and she began to receive critical acclaim for her performances. In 1951, she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in "Three Daring Daughters." In addition to her film work, Powell also had a successful career as a stage performer. She made her Broadway debut in 1954, in the musical "The Boy Friend." She went on to appear in several more Broadway productions, including "The Sound of Music" (1961) and "Irene" (1973). Throughout her career, Powell continued to perform as a singer, both on stage and in recordings. She released several albums, including "I Think of You" (1956) and "Jane Powell Sings" (1958). Powell's talent and hard work were recognized with several awards and honors throughout her career. In 1985, she was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She was also honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild in 1991. Powell continued to perform and make appearances well into her later years. She passed away on September 16, 2021, at the age of 92. Her legacy as a talented and beloved performer lives on through her many films, recordings, and stage performances.
