Sergei Istomin was a renowned classical music artist who was born on August 28, 1951, in Moscow, Russia. He was born into a family of musicians, with his father being a cellist and his mother a pianist. From a young age, Istomin was exposed to classical music and began playing the piano at the age of five. Istomin's talent was quickly recognized, and he began studying at the Moscow Conservatory at the age of ten. He studied under some of the most prominent teachers in Russia, including Yakov Flier and Lev Vlassenko. Istomin's dedication to his craft was evident from a young age, and he quickly became known for his technical proficiency and musicality. In 1971, Istomin won the prestigious Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition, which launched his career as a soloist. He went on to perform with some of the world's most renowned orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Istomin was known for his powerful and emotional performances, and his interpretations of the works of composers such as Beethoven, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff were highly regarded. Throughout his career, Istomin received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to classical music. In 1982, he was awarded the Order of Friendship of Peoples, one of the highest honors in the Soviet Union. He was also awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation in 1996 for his contributions to the arts. One of Istomin's most notable performances was his 1987 performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. The performance was highly praised by critics and is considered one of the greatest performances of the concerto. In addition to his solo career, Istomin was also a dedicated chamber musician. He was a founding member of the Istomin-Stern-Rose Trio, which was one of the most celebrated piano trios of the 20th century. The trio performed together for over 30 years and recorded numerous albums, including a complete cycle of Beethoven's piano trios. Istomin was also a dedicated teacher, and he taught at the Manhattan School of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music.
