Britt Marie Aruhn was born on May 12, 1950, in Stockholm, Sweden. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a cellist. Aruhn started playing the piano at the age of four and showed exceptional talent from an early age. At the age of 12, Aruhn made her debut as a soloist with the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor. This performance marked the beginning of her career as a classical pianist. Aruhn continued her musical education at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where she studied under the renowned pianist and pedagogue Gunnar Hallhagen. She also studied with other notable pianists, including Hans Leygraf and Maria João Pires. In 1972, Aruhn won first prize in the prestigious International Piano Competition in Geneva, Switzerland. This victory brought her international recognition and opened the doors to major concert engagements around the world. Throughout her career, Aruhn has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. She has also collaborated with some of the most distinguished conductors of our time, such as Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, and Daniel Barenboim. Aruhn's repertoire is vast and includes works by a wide range of composers, from Bach and Mozart to contemporary composers such as György Ligeti and Arvo Pärt. She is particularly known for her interpretations of the works of Chopin, Schumann, and Brahms. In addition to her concert career, Aruhn has also recorded extensively. Her recordings have received critical acclaim and have won numerous awards, including the Gramophone Award and the Diapason d'Or. Aruhn has also been recognized for her contributions to the arts. In 1996, she was awarded the Litteris et Artibus medal by the Swedish government for her outstanding achievements in the field of music. She has also been awarded honorary doctorates from several universities, including the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and the University of Gothenburg. Despite her success, Aruhn remains humble and dedicated to her craft. She continues to perform and record, and is committed to sharing her love of music with audiences around the world.
