Genre:ChoralMarion Newman is a Canadian mezzo-soprano and member of the Kwagiulth and Stó:lo First Nations. She was born on August 10, 1971, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Newman grew up in a musical family and began singing at a young age. Her mother was a pianist and her father was a singer and actor. Newman attended the University of British Columbia, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance. She then went on to study at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City, where she earned a Master of Music degree in opera performance. Newman's career as a classical music artist began in the early 2000s. She has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras and opera companies, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Opera, and the Canadian Opera Company. One of Newman's most notable performances was in the world premiere of the opera "Missing" by composer Brian Current and librettist Marie Clements. The opera tells the story of a young Indigenous woman who goes missing and the impact it has on her family and community. Newman played the role of the missing woman's mother, and her performance was praised for its emotional depth and power. Newman has also been recognized for her work as an advocate for Indigenous artists and issues. In 2018, she was awarded the Vancouver Mayor's Arts Award for Community Engagement in recognition of her work with the Vancouver Opera's First Nations Youth Opera Program. The program provides opportunities for Indigenous youth to learn about opera and create their own works. In addition to her work as a performer and advocate, Newman is also a composer. She has written several works for voice and piano, including "Four Songs on Poems by Emily Carr" and "Songs of the Wolf."
