The Dallas Symphony Chorus is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with its exceptional performances for over four decades. The chorus was founded in 1977 by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra's then-music director, Anshel Brusilow, who recognized the need for a professional-level chorus to accompany the orchestra in its performances. The chorus began with just 60 members, but it quickly grew in size and reputation. Under the leadership of its first director, David R. Davidson, the chorus established itself as one of the premier choral ensembles in the country. Davidson's tenure saw the chorus perform with some of the world's most renowned conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, and Seiji Ozawa. In 1994, the chorus welcomed its second director, Richard Coffey. Coffey brought a wealth of experience to the position, having previously served as the director of choral activities at the University of North Texas. Under Coffey's leadership, the chorus continued to thrive, performing a wide range of repertoire that included everything from Bach's Mass in B Minor to Orff's Carmina Burana. One of the highlights of the chorus's early years was its performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in 1983. The concert, which was conducted by Eduardo Mata, was a landmark event for the chorus, as it marked the first time that the ensemble had performed a major work with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. The performance was a resounding success, and it helped to establish the chorus as a major force in the classical music world. Over the years, the Dallas Symphony Chorus has continued to perform with some of the world's most renowned conductors and soloists. In 2005, the chorus performed Mahler's Symphony No. 8 with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Andrew Litton. The performance was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to cement the chorus's reputation as one of the finest ensembles of its kind. In addition to its work with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the chorus has also performed with other major orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The chorus has also collaborated with a number of prominent soloists, including Plácido Domingo, Renée Fleming, and Yo-Yo Ma. The Dallas Symphony Chorus has received numerous accolades over the years, including several Grammy Awards. In 1992, the chorus won a Grammy for its recording of Orff's Carmina Burana, which was conducted by Eduardo Mata. The chorus has also been nominated for several other Grammy Awards, including Best Choral Performance and Best Classical Album. In addition to its work on stage and in the recording studio, the Dallas Symphony Chorus is also committed to music education and outreach. The chorus regularly performs for school groups and community organizations, and it has established a number of programs designed to promote music education and appreciation among young people. Today, the Dallas Symphony Chorus continues to be one of the most respected and admired choral ensembles in the world. Under the leadership of its current director, Joshua Habermann, the chorus remains committed to excellence in performance and to the promotion of classical music as a vital and vibrant art form. With its rich history and its ongoing commitment to musical excellence, the Dallas Symphony Chorus is sure to continue to captivate audiences for many years to come.
