The BBC Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1930 by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) as the first permanent orchestra in the country. The orchestra was established to provide live music for the BBC's radio broadcasts, and its first concert was broadcast on October 22, 1930. The founding conductor of the orchestra was Adrian Boult, who remained in the position until 1950. Boult was succeeded by Malcolm Sargent, who led the orchestra until 1967. Over the years, the BBC Symphony Orchestra has been led by some of the most distinguished conductors in the world. In addition to Boult and Sargent, the orchestra has been conducted by Arturo Toscanini, Bruno Walter, Pierre Boulez, Leonard Bernstein, and Sir Colin Davis, among others. The current principal conductor of the orchestra is Sakari Oramo, who has held the position since 2013. The BBC Symphony Chorus was founded in 1924, six years before the orchestra. The chorus was established to provide choral music for the BBC's radio broadcasts, and its first performance was broadcast on December 31, 1924. The founding conductor of the chorus was Leslie Woodgate, who remained in the position until 1961. The BBC Symphony Orchestra & Chorus has performed a wide range of repertoire over the years, from the classical works of Mozart and Beethoven to the contemporary compositions of living composers.
