Han Chen is a classical pianist who has gained international recognition for his virtuosic performances and musical sensitivity. Born in Taiwan in 1993, Chen began playing the piano at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied with renowned teachers in Taiwan before moving to the United States to pursue his musical education. Chen attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with Yoheved Kaplinsky and Robert McDonald. He also participated in masterclasses with distinguished pianists such as Emanuel Ax, Murray Perahia, and András Schiff. During his time at Juilliard, Chen won several awards and competitions, including the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition and the Juilliard Concerto Competition. After graduating from Juilliard with a Bachelor of Music degree, Chen continued his studies at the Yale School of Music, where he earned a Master of Music degree and an Artist Diploma. He studied with Boris Berman, one of the world's leading interpreters of Russian piano music, and also worked with Peter Frankl and Wei-Yi Yang. Chen's performances at Yale were highly acclaimed, and he was awarded the Elizabeth Parisot Prize for outstanding pianist. Chen has performed extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, appearing as a soloist with major orchestras such as the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the Taiwan Philharmonic. He has also given recitals at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Chen's repertoire is wide-ranging, encompassing works by composers from Bach to Ligeti, but he has a particular affinity for the music of Chopin and Rachmaninoff. One of Chen's most notable performances was his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 2017, where he played Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 under the baton of Yannick Nézet-Séguin. The Philadelphia Inquirer praised Chen's "dazzling technique and poetic sensibility," and the performance was hailed as a triumph. Chen has also performed with other major orchestras, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan, and the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. In addition to his performances as a soloist, Chen is also an active chamber musician. He has collaborated with renowned artists such as violinist Itzhak Perlman and cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and he is a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center's prestigious CMS Two program. Chen has also participated in numerous music festivals, including the Marlboro Music Festival, the Ravinia Festival, and the Verbier Festival. Chen's recordings have received critical acclaim, with his debut album, featuring works by Chopin and Schumann, being praised for its "impeccable technique and musicality" by Gramophone magazine. He has also recorded works by Rachmaninoff and Ravel, among others. Chen's recordings showcase his ability to bring out the emotional depth and nuance of the music he plays, as well as his technical prowess. Chen's talent and hard work have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In addition to his competition wins and prizes, he has been named a Gilmore Young Artist, a prestigious award that recognizes exceptional young pianists.
