Lucy van Dael is a renowned Dutch violinist and conductor who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on October 19, 1946, in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Lucy van Dael grew up in a family of musicians. Her father, Kees van Dael, was a renowned conductor, and her mother, Jeanne van Dael, was a pianist. Lucy van Dael started playing the violin at the age of six and showed exceptional talent from an early age. Lucy van Dael received her formal music education at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam, where she studied under the tutelage of Herman Krebbers. She later continued her studies with Sigiswald Kuijken, a renowned Belgian violinist and conductor. Under Kuijken's guidance, Lucy van Dael developed a deep understanding of Baroque music and became an expert in playing on period instruments. In 1975, Lucy van Dael co-founded the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century with Frans Brüggen, a Dutch conductor and flutist. The orchestra specialized in performing music from the Baroque and Classical periods on period instruments. Lucy van Dael played a significant role in the orchestra as a concertmaster and soloist. She also conducted the orchestra on several occasions. Lucy van Dael's performances with the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century received critical acclaim and established her as one of the leading Baroque violinists of her time. She performed in major concert halls across Europe, including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Musikverein in Vienna. She also performed in the United States, Japan, and Australia. Lucy van Dael's repertoire includes works by Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel, Antonio Vivaldi, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven. She is particularly known for her interpretations of Bach's solo violin works, which she performs on a Baroque violin with gut strings. Her performances of Bach's works are characterized by their clarity, precision, and emotional depth. In addition to her work with the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, Lucy van Dael has collaborated with several other leading Baroque ensembles, including La Petite Bande, the Academy of Ancient Music, and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra. She has also performed as a soloist with many orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Lucy van Dael has recorded extensively throughout her career, with over 50 recordings to her name. Her recordings include solo works by Bach, Vivaldi, and Mozart, as well as concertos and chamber music by various composers. Her recordings have received numerous awards and accolades, including the Edison Award, the Diapason d'Or, and the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik. In addition to her performing career, Lucy van Dael is also a respected music educator. She has taught at several music conservatories, including the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln. She has also given masterclasses and workshops around the world, sharing her knowledge and expertise with the next generation of musicians. In 2000, she was awarded the Order of the Netherlands Lion, one of the highest honors in the Netherlands.
