Born in Seoul, South Korea in 1973, Yang began playing the cello at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He went on to study at the Yewon School and the Seoul Arts High School, where he was mentored by the legendary cellist Myung-Wha Chung. In 1991, Yang moved to Paris to continue his studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, where he studied with Philippe Muller and won first prize in the cello competition. This marked the beginning of a successful career as a soloist and chamber musician, as Yang began performing regularly in major concert halls around the world. One of the highlights of Yang's early career was his performance at the 1994 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, where he won the silver medal. This prestigious competition is known for launching the careers of many of the world's greatest classical musicians, and Yang's success there helped to establish him as a rising star in the classical music world. Since then, Yang has gone on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with some of the most celebrated conductors of our time, including Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, and Valery Gergiev. In addition to his work as a soloist, Yang is also a passionate chamber musician, and has performed with some of the world's most renowned ensembles, including the Guarneri Quartet and the Emerson Quartet. He is also a founding member of the Trio Owon, which has been praised for its innovative programming and virtuosic performances.
