Judith Le Clair is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. She was born on August 22, 1959, in New York City, United States. Her parents were both musicians, and they encouraged her to pursue a career in music from a young age. Le Clair started playing the bassoon when she was just 12 years old, and she quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Le Clair attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied under the tutelage of Harold Goltzer. She graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1981 and went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at the Yale School of Music. While at Yale, she studied with Arthur Weisberg and graduated in 1983. After completing her studies, Le Clair began her professional career as a bassoonist. She joined the New Haven Symphony Orchestra as their principal bassoonist in 1983 and held the position for two years. In 1985, she joined the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra as their second bassoonist, a position she held for 25 years. During her time with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Le Clair performed in over 3,000 performances and played on numerous recordings. Le Clair has also performed with many other orchestras and ensembles throughout her career. She has been a guest soloist with the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Philadelphia Orchestra, among others. She has also performed with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the New York Woodwind Quintet, and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. In addition to her performances, Le Clair is also a dedicated teacher. She has taught at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the Yale School of Music. She has also given masterclasses and workshops around the world, sharing her knowledge and expertise with aspiring musicians. Le Clair has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 1980, she won the International Double Reed Society's Young Artist Competition. She was also a finalist in the Naumburg Competition in 1982. In 1993, she was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians and provides financial support to help them further their careers. Le Clair has also been recognized for her contributions to the field of music. In 2009, she was awarded the Richard J. Bogomolny National Service Award by Chamber Music America. The award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the chamber music field through their work as performers, educators, administrators, or advocates. Throughout her career, Le Clair has been a passionate advocate for new music. She has commissioned and premiered numerous works by contemporary composers, including John Harbison, Joan Tower, and Michael Daugherty. She has also recorded several albums of contemporary music, including a solo album titled "Bassoon Music of the Americas." In addition to her work as a bassoonist, Le Clair is also an accomplished pianist. She has performed as a soloist and chamber musician on the piano, and she has also accompanied many of her students in recitals and competitions.
