He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. His father was a violinist and his mother was a pianist, and they both encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. Reynolds began his musical education by studying the trumpet, which he played in his high school band. He went on to study music at the University of Missouri, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1949. He then went on to study at the Eastman School of Music, where he earned a Master of Music degree in 1951. After completing his studies, Reynolds began his career as a composer and educator. He taught at several universities, including the University of Michigan, the University of Miami, and the Eastman School of Music. He also served as the composer-in-residence for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Reynolds was known for his innovative approach to composition, which often incorporated elements of jazz and other popular music styles. He was also known for his use of unconventional instruments, such as the slide whistle and the kazoo. One of Reynolds' most famous works is his "Symphony No. 3," which was commissioned by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 1965. The piece is known for its use of unconventional instruments, including a slide whistle and a kazoo. It also features a jazz-influenced section that showcases Reynolds' unique style. Another notable work by Reynolds is his "Partita for Solo Trumpet," which was written in 1956. The piece is considered a classic of the trumpet repertoire and is often performed by trumpet players around the world. In addition to his work as a composer, Reynolds was also a respected educator. He taught at the University of Michigan for over 30 years and was known for his dedication to his students. Many of his former students have gone on to successful careers in music, including composer Michael Daugherty and trumpeter Charles Schlueter. Reynolds received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Fulbright Scholarship. He was also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Verne Reynolds passed away on August 28, 2011, at the age of 84.
