He was a violinist who was known for his virtuosity and musicality. Gimpel was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a violinist who taught him how to play the instrument. He began playing the violin at the age of four and gave his first public performance at the age of six. Gimpel's family moved to Vienna when he was a child, and he continued his musical education there. He studied with some of the most prominent violin teachers of the time, including Carl Flesch and Jenő Hubay. Gimpel's talent was recognized early on, and he won several awards and competitions as a young musician. In 1933, Gimpel made his debut as a soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, playing the Beethoven Violin Concerto. This performance was a major success, and it launched Gimpel's career as a soloist. He went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. Gimpel was known for his interpretations of the works of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven, but he also played a wide range of other composers, including Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Bartók.
