NorwayPeriod:ModernGenre:ChamberThe Cikada String Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their unique sound and innovative approach to music for over three decades. Founded in 1989 in Oslo, Norway, the quartet has become one of the most respected and sought-after ensembles in the world. The founding members of the Cikada String Quartet were violinists Odd Hannisdal and Per Kristian Skalstad, violist Marek Konstantynowicz, and cellist Morten Hannisdal. The quartet's name, "Cikada," is derived from a Norwegian insect known for its distinctive sound, which the quartet felt was a fitting representation of their own unique sound. From the beginning, the Cikada String Quartet set out to explore new and unconventional approaches to classical music. They quickly gained a reputation for their innovative programming, which often included contemporary works alongside more traditional pieces. The quartet's commitment to new music has led them to collaborate with some of the most important composers of our time, including Kaija Saariaho, Helmut Lachenmann, and Magnus Lindberg. Over the years, the Cikada String Quartet has performed at some of the most prestigious venues and festivals in the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Salzburg Festival, and the Edinburgh International Festival. They have also collaborated with some of the most respected musicians in the classical music world, including pianist Leif Ove Andsnes and soprano Barbara Hannigan. One of the highlights of the Cikada String Quartet's career was their performance of the complete string quartets of Beethoven at the Oslo Chamber Music Festival in 2013. The quartet's interpretation of these iconic works was praised for its depth and sensitivity, and it cemented their reputation as one of the foremost interpreters of Beethoven's music. In addition to their performances, the Cikada String Quartet has also been recognized for their recordings. They have released numerous albums on the ECM label, including a critically acclaimed recording of the complete string quartets of Helmut Lachenmann. The quartet's recording of Kaija Saariaho's "Graal théâtre" was also awarded the prestigious Diapason d'Or. Throughout their career, the Cikada String Quartet has been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1999, they were awarded the Norwegian Grammy for their recording of works by Arne Nordheim. They have also been awarded the prestigious Spellemannprisen, Norway's highest music award, on multiple occasions. Despite their many accomplishments, the Cikada String Quartet remains committed to exploring new and innovative approaches to classical music. They continue to collaborate with composers and musicians from around the world, and their performances and recordings continue to inspire and captivate audiences.More....
