Somero's early musical education was at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he studied under the tutelage of Liisa Pohjola. He later continued his studies at the Moscow Conservatory with Lev Vlassenko, one of the most prominent piano teachers of the 20th century. In addition to his career as a performer, Somero is also a prolific composer. He has written numerous works for solo piano, chamber ensembles, and orchestra. His compositions are characterized by their lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and evocative use of Finnish folk music. Somero has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1983, he was awarded the Pro Finlandia Medal, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a Finnish citizen.
