Born in Seoul, South Korea, on December 31, 1954, Bae showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of six. His parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Bae's early musical education was in South Korea, where he studied with some of the country's most prominent violin teachers. He quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent and was awarded numerous prizes in national competitions. In 1972, Bae moved to the United States to continue his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City. At Juilliard, Bae studied with the renowned violinist Ivan Galamian, who was known for his rigorous teaching methods. Bae thrived under Galamian's tutelage and quickly became one of his star pupils. He also studied with other notable violinists, including Dorothy DeLay and Itzhak Perlman.
