He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Reesen began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and violin with his father. He later studied composition with Carl Nielsen, one of Denmark's most prominent composers. Reesen's early compositions were influenced by the Romantic style of music, but he later developed his own unique style that incorporated elements of Danish folk music. He was known for his use of rich harmonies and colorful orchestration. In 1915, Reesen was appointed conductor of the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for 25 years. During his tenure, he transformed the orchestra into one of the finest in Denmark. He also served as conductor of the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra from 1939 to 1945. Reesen's compositions were well-received by audiences and critics alike. His most famous work is his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered in 1922 and is considered one of the greatest Danish symphonies of the 20th century. He also composed several operas, including "The King's Ring" and "The Golden Calf," which were both successful. In addition to his work as a composer and conductor, Reesen was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen and was a mentor to many young Danish composers. Reesen received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1947, he was awarded the Order of the Dannebrog, one of Denmark's highest honors. He was also awarded the Carl Nielsen Prize in 1957 for his contributions to Danish music. Emil Reesen died on December 19, 1964, in Copenhagen, Denmark. He left behind a legacy as one of Denmark's most important composers and conductors.
