Born on September 18, 1934, in Milan, Italy, Ceccato showed an early interest in music and began studying the piano at the age of six. He later switched to the violin and studied at the Milan Conservatory. However, it was conducting that captured his imagination, and he began studying with the legendary conductor, Carlo Maria Giulini. Ceccato's career as a conductor began in 1958 when he made his debut with the RAI Symphony Orchestra in Milan. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and versatile conductor, and his career took off. In 1960, he was appointed the principal conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, a position he held for six years. In 1988, he was appointed the principal conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for five years. During this time, he also conducted the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. Ceccato has also made a significant contribution to the world of opera. He has conducted productions at the Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Vienna State Opera, and La Scala in Milan.
