He was the son of a piano teacher and a singer, and his parents recognized his musical talent at an early age. Rott began his musical education at the Vienna Conservatory at the age of 14, where he studied composition with Anton Bruckner and piano with Franz Krenn. During his time at the conservatory, Rott quickly established himself as a talented composer. His early works, including a string quartet and a piano trio, were well-received by his teachers and fellow students. In 1880, Rott completed his Symphony in E major, which was hailed as a masterpiece by his teachers and considered one of the most important works of the late Romantic period. Despite his early success, Rott struggled with mental illness throughout his life. He suffered from delusions and paranoia, and his behavior became increasingly erratic. In 1881, he was expelled from the conservatory after threatening a fellow student with a knife. He was briefly institutionalized, but was released after a few months. After leaving the conservatory, Rott struggled to find work as a composer. He worked as a conductor and music teacher, but his mental health continued to deteriorate.
