Le Concert Spirituel Orchestra & Chorus is a French classical music ensemble that was founded in 1725 by Anne Danican Philidor. The ensemble was one of the first public concert series in France and was known for its innovative programming and high-quality performances. Anne Danican Philidor was a prominent musician and composer in France during the 18th century. He was a member of the Philidor family, which was known for its musical talent and contributions to French music. Anne Danican Philidor was appointed as the director of music for the King's chamber in 1717 and was responsible for organizing music for the royal court. In 1725, he founded Le Concert Spirituel Orchestra & Chorus as a way to bring classical music to a wider audience. The ensemble's first concert was held on March 18, 1725, at the Tuileries Palace in Paris. The concert featured music by Jean-Baptiste Lully, Jean-Philippe Rameau, and other prominent French composers. The concert was a huge success and attracted a large audience. This success led to the establishment of a regular concert series, which was held at various venues in Paris. Le Concert Spirituel Orchestra & Chorus quickly became known for its innovative programming and high-quality performances. The ensemble performed a wide range of music, including works by French and Italian composers, as well as music from other European countries. The ensemble also premiered many new works by contemporary composers, including Christoph Willibald Gluck, who was a frequent collaborator. One of the highlights of Le Concert Spirituel Orchestra & Chorus's early years was its performance of Handel's Messiah in 1754. The performance was the first time the work had been performed in France and was a huge success. The ensemble continued to perform the work regularly, and it became one of its signature pieces. Le Concert Spirituel Orchestra & Chorus continued to perform throughout the 18th century, but its popularity began to decline in the early 19th century. The ensemble was disbanded in 1790 during the French Revolution, but it was revived in 1987 by Hervé Niquet, a French conductor and musicologist. Under Niquet's leadership, Le Concert Spirituel Orchestra & Chorus has become one of the leading classical music ensembles in France. The ensemble has performed at many prestigious venues, including the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Opéra de Paris, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. The ensemble has also recorded many critically acclaimed albums, including recordings of Handel's Messiah and Mozart's Requiem. One of the highlights of Le Concert Spirituel Orchestra & Chorus's recent performances was its 2017 performance of Mozart's Requiem at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. The performance was part of a series of concerts celebrating the 225th anniversary of Mozart's death. The performance was praised for its emotional intensity and the ensemble's impeccable musicianship. Le Concert Spirituel Orchestra & Chorus has also received many awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 2011, the ensemble was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for its recording of Handel's Messiah. The ensemble has also been nominated for several other awards, including the Gramophone Award and the International Classical Music Award. Le Concert Spirituel Orchestra & Chorus continues to be a leading classical music ensemble in France and around the world.
