George McPhee was born on May 12, 1975, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, McPhee showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. McPhee's talent was quickly recognized, and he began performing in public at the age of six. He won his first competition at the age of eight and went on to win numerous awards throughout his childhood and teenage years. In 1993, McPhee was accepted into the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and teacher, Maria João Pires. During his time at the academy, McPhee honed his skills and developed a deep understanding of classical music. After graduating from the academy in 1997, McPhee began his professional career as a concert pianist. He quickly gained a reputation for his technical skill and emotional depth, and was soon in demand as a soloist and chamber musician. One of McPhee's most memorable performances was at the 2001 Proms, where he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the London Symphony Orchestra. The performance was hailed as a triumph, with critics praising McPhee's "dazzling technique" and "sensitive interpretation." McPhee's career continued to flourish throughout the 2000s, with highlights including performances at the Edinburgh International Festival, the Salzburg Festival, and the BBC Proms. He also collaborated with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. In 2010, McPhee was awarded the prestigious International Classical Music Award for his recording of Chopin's complete Nocturnes. The recording was praised for its "subtle phrasing" and "poetic sensibility." Despite his success, McPhee remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to practice for hours every day, always striving to improve his technique and deepen his understanding of the music he played. Tragically, McPhee's career was cut short when he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2015. He underwent treatment, but his health continued to deteriorate, and he passed away on June 15, 2016, at the age of 41. McPhee's legacy lives on through his recordings and the memories of those who were fortunate enough to hear him play. He will be remembered as one of the greatest pianists of his generation, a musician who brought passion, sensitivity, and technical brilliance to every performance.
