She was the daughter of a singer and a voice teacher, and her family was deeply involved in the world of music. From a young age, Lehmann showed a natural talent for singing, and her parents encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Lehmann began her formal training in music at the age of 15, studying with her mother and then with various teachers in Berlin and Vienna. She made her debut as an opera singer in Prague in 1865, at the age of 17, and quickly gained a reputation as a talented and versatile performer. Over the course of her career, Lehmann performed in many of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Vienna State Opera. She was known for her powerful and expressive voice, as well as her ability to convey emotion and drama through her performances. One of Lehmann's most notable performances was in the role of Isolde in Richard Wagner's opera Tristan und Isolde. She first performed the role in 1886, and it quickly became one of her signature roles. She went on to perform the role many times throughout her career, and her interpretation of the character was widely praised for its depth and intensity. In addition to her work as an opera singer, Lehmann was also a respected voice teacher and author. She wrote several books on singing and vocal technique, including "How to Sing" and "My Path Through Life." She also taught at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, where she trained many of the leading singers of the next generation. Throughout her career, Lehmann received many honors and awards for her contributions to the world of music. In 1902, she was awarded the title of Kammersängerin by the Austrian government, in recognition of her outstanding achievements as a singer. She was also awarded the Order of the Starry Cross by the Emperor of Austria in 1915, and the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown in 1917. Lehmann continued to perform and teach until the end of her life. She died on May 17, 1929, in Berlin, at the age of 80.
