Bielby started playing the piano at a young age and showed a keen interest in music. Bielby's musical education began at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied organ and composition. He later continued his studies at the University of Durham, where he earned a degree in music. Bielby's talent as an organist was evident from an early age, and he won several awards and scholarships for his performances. In 1970, Bielby was appointed as the organist and choirmaster at Wakefield Cathedral, where he served for 14 years. During his tenure, he transformed the cathedral's music program and established a reputation as a skilled conductor. He also composed several pieces of music, including choral works and organ music. Bielby's career as a conductor took off in the 1980s when he was appointed as the conductor of the Harrogate Symphony Orchestra. He also conducted several other orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Mozart Players, and the English Chamber Orchestra. One of Bielby's most significant achievements was his work with the Armonico Consort, a vocal ensemble that he founded in 2001.
